Simplicity is never seen as a compliment. If someone were to describe your outfit as simple you would wonder how they drew that conclusion. No one wants any extension of theirs to be simple- their taste, their homes or their livelihood. I, for the life of me never understood.
When I was 7 years old and my mother was demanding an answer for what I planned to do with my life I said "| just wanted a decent life". Disheartening for her to hear while I was being completely honest. I have not been painting much lately- and the reason isn't because I'm a mother now. If I did not have vigilant new eyes on me l likely would have put artwork down eventually. I always wanted to live my life first and be an artist secondary to that- not for it to be all consuming. That is what is expected. In our overstimulated, highly vocalized, impatient and underwhelmed internet frontier. Artistry has become something I never signed on to do- to make people see my face, to like me as a person first and an artist second. The question of how do I stay revelant?
When any image you'd like to see can be produced at the touch of your fingers for free- why should they care about my work? So I stopped trying to curate perfect pieces, I deleted my TikTok- I will not be doing any lives. I will not be using any trending audio. I will not be obsessed over the messages of my pieces and if they carry. My work is contribution to the infinite pathos of experience. And unlike the internet, that dialogue is infinite between all artists since human conception.
These blue morning glories mark the early beginning of me unlearning all those superfluous expectations. To be continued-
