Optimist

8in x 8in. Oil on canvas. This series is celebrating the simple- and this piece is no exception. The skull is a symbol on thought. My culture utilizes these effigies as celebration and commemoration. So I have never seen them as Halloween props or harbingers with a negative connotation. They mark the passage of time- changing of seasons. Nothing more- on its own it has little narrative without context in this piece- yellow highlights celebrating the vibrancy of life- its gaze upward on a strong neck. I relied heavily on brush strokes to elude to the details because nothing ruins a piece more than overthinking and overworking. I found invigoration in visiting this subject l've fondly loved drawing as long as I can remember. While I pass another year around the sun I acknowledge my own mortality and it is absolutely beautiful.
